Mogadishu, (Insidesomalia.org) At least six people were killed and an unspecific number of others were wounded on Monday when fighting erupted between Somali government forces and insurgents in Bakara Market, the main market in the country, says witness.

The fighting which was heavy was used with heavy artillery , mortars , hand grenades and small arms scattered many areas including Geed Jaceyl, Aden Adde street and Howl wadag neighborhood in Mogadishu.

Reports said that government forces retreated from their position after insurgents assaulted them heavily and insurgents held the positions briefly, said Warsame Mohamed, a local journalist in Mogadishu.

A technical vehicle mounted with a heavy gun confiscated from government force was seen in areas where insurgents have their strongholds.

“Insurgents and their supporters were seen celebrating around the technical confiscated” said Mohamed Elmi, a resident at Howl wadag neighborhood.

“Since last month government forces with heavy military equipment cordoned the main entrance of the Bakara market with out apparent reason offered” said Ahmed Farhan, a businessman in the Bakara market.

United Nations and local human rights groups said more than 6,000 people were killed and at least one million others fled from their homes since on December 2006 when fighting sparked in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
